When it comes to lodging, I appreciate the personal touch.

Well, that’s what you’ll find at Wanaka Springs Lodge. Owners, Lyn and Murray Finn, greet you at the door, keep the conversation and drinks flowing during the afternoon cocktail hour plus prepare your made-to-order breakfast while you sit at the kitchen table chatting with other guests.

Located on a quiet cul-de-sac, the Qualmark “4 star plus” lodge is a short walk from the heart of Wanaka, New Zealand, with its beautiful lake and spectacular alpine setting. The area has enough activities to satisfy even the most active baby boomer including hiking, skiing, scenic roads to explore by bike or car, or exciting jet boat rides. Ask the Finn’s, they’ll be happy to offer advice on what to do.

But, save enough time to sit in their flower-filled garden or soak in the 8-person hot tub. Need to get in touch with family back home? The lodge provides a guest office with free broad-band or take advantage of the wireless internet.

For dinner, walk the few blocks into town. At Missy’s Kitchen Restaurant and Bar, take in the lake view while enjoying a steak dinner. Or, try the Dover sole stuffed with shrimp and crayfish at Capriccio Restaurant and Bar. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Alan and I visited Wanaka in November 2007. To read more about our Wanaka experience and our jet boat ride, visit Donna’s trip blog.
