Discovering a gem of a lodge in Greer, Arizona

by Donna Hull on 2008/07/23

Do you like surprises? I do, especially when it’s a cozy lodge located in Arizona’s White Mountains. Last month, that’s what Alan and I found at the end of Highway 373, in the village of Greer (population approximately 122).

The deck view at Amberian Peaks Lodge

Amberian Peaks Lodge sits on a hillside overlooking the small mountain community. Multiple deck levels jut from the building offering valley views for breakfast, lunch, dinner or lazing the day away in the summer sun.

Inside the lodge, a sofa sits in front of a stone fireplace in the high-ceilinged lounge, the perfect spot for warming up on a snowy afternoon. An old jukebox decorates the Cantina, where guests gather in the early evening for cocktails or wine.

Accommodations vary, offering flexibility for families and groups. Many of the rooms include fireplaces for that romantic weekend. As I walked around the lodge, I saw possibilities for family reunions, restful retreats or vacationing with the grandkids. Ask owner, Ann Poyas, about arranging a Mystery Dinner weekend for your favorite group of baby boomer friends. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Speaking of dinner, what a surprise to find fine dining in such a remote location. During the summer, sit on the deck sipping a glass of Luna Chardonnay before sampling the Verde Halibut. Yum!

Now that we’ve experienced the lodge in the summer, Alan and I plan to return this winter for a weekend in the snow. Visit Donna’s trip blog to read more about our stay in Greer.

Do you have a favorite mountain get-away? Post a comment. I want to go there, too!

Betty, I've never been to Vail but your description makes me want to go there. Tomorrow! Thanks for sharing your special mountain escape.

Donna - I have a favorite mountain get away. It's Vail in the summer. I started going there in 1977 for only a few days each summer. From 1981-1991 I would go for a month - renting a condo & enjoying the fabulous mountain weather, activities and scenery. Due to family obligations I stayed away for 15 years, but 2 years ago started once again making it a part of each summer. Everyone thinks of Vail as a winter retreat. Although I have never seen it with snow (still on my must do list), I love it in the summers. The Town of Vail has many different music & art programs planned each year, plus there is the usual hiking, biking, and any other mountain activity a person is interested in. I like it for the total relaxation it brings after 11 hectic months of life in Houston. Better make that 10 months - I do have to throw in at least one cruise each year. I call my time there "cleaning the cobwebs out of my brain." And it works! There is a slogan in various places around Vail - "Winter is Wonderful, Summer is Why We Live Here."
