Kapitea Ridge
When Alan and I toured New Zealand with Robert Panzer of Tailored Travel, he introduced us to a sophisticated luxury lodge on the wild, West Coast of the South Island. Located halfway between Hokitika and Greymouth, Kapitea Ridge sits on a hillside, surrounded by a colorful garden with views of the Tasman Sea. The outside patios offer quiet, relaxation while trails leading down the hill towards the sea beckon guests to explore.
Inside, a dramatic red and purple color scheme serves as the backdrop for a collection of New Zealand art. In the afternoons, guests enjoy a glass of “The Doctor’s Riesling 2006″ from Forrest Estate in the garden conservatory while chatting with owners, Trixie and Murray. A full breakfast is served in either the Conservatory or the patio, weather permitting.

For dinner, drive into Hokitika where “French cuisine is served with a Kiwi accent” at Café de Paris.
With so many activities available at Kapitea Ridge, it’s hard to think of leaving. But, the lodge makes a convenient headquarters for visiting area attractions including Punakaikai Pancake Rocks and Blowholes at Paparoa National Park or sampling the arts and crafts scene in Hokitika .
The next time I return to New Zealand, you can bet that a few days of exploring and relaxing at Kapitea Ridge will be on the agenda.
