Yes, we’ve lost another quality travel product. Last year, I wrote about a Peter Deilmann River cruise for music lovers. Although I have not traveled with the company, their reputation is outstanding. I was looking forward to trying them one day as many of my baby boomer travel friends have enjoyed their Peter Deilmann experience.
Unfortunately, that won’t be happening. Yesterday, the company announced that it is ceasing river cruise operations in 2010. Kudos to Peter Deilmann for announcing this far enough in advance to allow travelers the time to reconsider their travel plans. According to Andrea Rotondo, publisher of Luxury Cruise Bible, Deilmann will continue to operate their ocean cruising vessel. For more information read this explanation from Cruise Critic.

Is Viking River Cruises in trouble, also?
This will be our 4th and 5th trip on Deilmann. In '06 we sailed the Mozart and their classical music cruise… in '07, we sailed on the Princess of Provence… in '08 we sailed the Heidelberg down the Rhine and Mosel — and finally, in October of '09 we sail the Katarina Von Bora down the Elbe to Prague, overnight at hotel in Prague, bussed to Passau and one last and final trip on the Mozart down the Danube to Budapest and back. We are very sad that this will be our last time to sail on their wonderful line. The food, service, accomodations and tours were always five star.
We planned on going on the MS Monet, a small ship from Venice to Dubrovnik in 2010… now we find out that they, too, have filed bankruptcy. Does this mean that the era of five star small ships is coming to an end? I do hope not.
I wondered about that also as they send me a new deal every week, but, of course, they want all the money up front a year ahead of time. Scary isn't it?

We travelled with Deilmann on the Mozart and it was the best vacation we have ever had. The ship and crew were fantastic and each meal we would say “this can't get better” and the next meal it would be better. Kudos to the soup chef as well as the other chefs. It truly was an unforgetable experience and we're sorry to hear Deilmann is leaving the river cruise market.
