Baby boomer travelers, it’s no secret that Alan and I enjoy staying at Sunglow Ranch when exploring southeastern Arizona. In my reviews of the Cochise County property, I’ve written about the delicious food, scenic location and convenience to Chiricahua National Monument.
Now, with Sunglow’s efforts to become a “green” lodging property, there’s even more reason to schedule a trip. Take a look at some of their environmental practices:
- Water Conservation: Water cachments attached to the buildings collect rainwater for irrigating the landscape. Loose rock structures placed around the property prevent soil erosion during monsoon season while also establishing habitat areas for wildlife.
- Reduction in toxic products: Elimination of cleaners that contain harsh chemicals or petroleum. Avoiding the use of all styrofoam products.
- Composting: Coffee grounds replenish the ranch’s soil. All organic scraps are placed in a composter.
But Sunglow Cafe’s slow food practices deserve the most attention. The emphasis is on locally grown and organic food products served “in season.” Breads are baked with organic grains, ground in an on-site flour mill. The beef is hormone-free and grass fed. Free range chicken is served as well as wild-caught fish. The ranch erected a cold frame for growing greens plus a greenhouse where herbs are cultivated.
When Alan and I dined at Holuakoa Café on the Big Island of Hawaii, we discovered how much better locally sourced food tastes. I can’t wait to visit Sunglow Ranch again to sample their “in season” menu.
