My Itchy Travel Feet | The Baby Boomer's Guide To Travel

Turn your iPhone or iTouch Into a Hands-Free Viewing Device

2010/03/09by Donna Hull

iTouch-case-idoxBaby boomers, have you found yourself crammed into an airline seat recently? No wonder some of your seat mates have resorted to viewing videos on an iPhone or iTouch. Who has room to use a laptop on an airplane these days? But, holding an iPhone or iTouch for the entire flight isn’t fun either. Let me introduce you to a solution.

The idox Traveler Series is a case for an iPhone, iTouch or iPod Nano. The hard case not only provides protection, it also turns into a stand. No more holding your device for the entire flight. And, rubber feet on the bottom of the stand keep the case in place so it won’t slip on your seat tray.

The folks at idox sent me one of the silver cases (it also comes in black or pink) to try with my iTouch. Now, I’m not the most mechanically inclined, but sliding my iTouch into the case proved to be fairly easy. Although, I have to really pry the lid to open it; at least I know it’s not going to flip open when not in use.

idox-case-closedI like the sleek look of the case, with a finish that doesn’t show fingerprints. It provides adequate protection for the iTouch except on the ends so I’ll be careful when storing it in my purse or travel backpack.

My only complaint is the price of $34.95. I’d like to see that come down a bit. However, for now, idox is offering free shippping.

Want to know what other reviewers think of the idox?

The next time I’m traveling, I’m going to download the Kindle app for iTouch. You’ll find me sitting on the plane, with my iTouch placed in the idox case, reading away — hands free.

Also, when we cruise with Regent, there are no alarm clocks in the cabin. Now that we have an idox, we’ll use our iTouch as the alarm clock.

Long time baby boomer readers, you know where this is going. To win an  idox, tell me what you’ll be viewing after placing your iTouch, iPhone or ipod Nano in the case. Enter the contest by leaving your comment at the end of this post. Please include your email address for contact purposes. Contest ends on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 11:00 p.m. Arizona Mountain Standard Time. Winner will be announced as soon as possible. Remember, according to my general contest rules, the winner must be a U.S. resident and respond within 48 hours of receiving the notification email; or I chose another winner.

idox provided the idox case for iTouch for this review.

UPDATE: March 16, 2010, 11:01 p.m.. This contest has expired. As soon as the winner acknowledges receipt of my email, I’ll make the announcement.

I'm pretty tech basic, but I just saw on a friend's FB status line asking about what appears to be – this!

Kim March 9, 2010 at 3:47 pm

I've been looking for just this product! I travel a lot and I like to watch TV shows on my iPhone while on the plane. It's hard to hold my phone up for hours!

Trisha Miller March 9, 2010 at 3:56 pm

I saw an ad for this case recently and have been lusting after one ever since (specifically, the pink one of course!) but like you I find the price a wee bit steep….I have a number of movies and TV shows on my iPhone that I like to watch when traveling, so this would be a wonderful case to have!

Sandy2118 March 9, 2010 at 4:43 pm

I want one of these!

thelittlefluffycat March 9, 2010 at 5:56 pm

If I had one of these, I'd definitely use it for reading. But just upping the protection level on the screen is HUGE.

Catherine Winn March 9, 2010 at 6:30 pm

I would definitely catch up on some seasons of Lost – of course watching a show about a plane crash may not be the best thing to watch while on a flight! This is a really cool product though!

Leslie Lang March 9, 2010 at 8:21 pm

Thanks for the contest! I'd use this to let my 5-year-old watch movies on long plane rides. Heaven!

Shannon Baas March 9, 2010 at 9:13 pm

What a great idea.

Ann March 9, 2010 at 9:45 pm

Oh hello hello hello I love this. Let's see…. where I'll use it: on the plane to Miami, on the bus to NYC, on the bedside table at home, on my desk at work, where WON'T I be using it? Well, nowhere since I WILL be using it everywhere. Love it and have been looking for something exactly like it. :-)

MDz March 9, 2010 at 11:04 pm

I have a lot of trips coming up so I'd love this to travel with! Its impossible for me to sleep on airplanes so it would be great to be able to watch movies and TV to pass the time! I'd probably be watching The Office or Always Sunny in Philadelphia! Thanks!

Kim Lucas March 10, 2010 at 12:45 am

Family movies of the kids I am missing while away….

Susan March 10, 2010 at 3:39 am

Ooo, that looks like a cool accessory. Maybe I'll get one for my boyfriend and his iPhone!

frankie1 March 10, 2010 at 5:21 am

I'll be watching Up in the Air on this thing.

traymona March 10, 2010 at 1:43 pm

I catch up on episodes of Heroes and Friday Night Lights that I missed.

ScooterMcKyle March 10, 2010 at 3:26 pm

I'd probably watch some videos on YouTube about green smoothies and raw foods! :)

Melanie March 10, 2010 at 3:36 pm

I will watch the Hangover if I have this product, the next time I go on vacation.

MyKidsEatSquid March 10, 2010 at 6:29 pm

Cool idea. I love my iPhone so any extra gear interests me.

adrienne87 March 11, 2010 at 12:25 am

I would be watch a couple of class that i downloaded from itunesU.

holeinthedonut March 11, 2010 at 4:58 am

Oh yes Donna, I MUST get one of these! I'm on the road now and have discovered two apps that let me download scores of free books – classics I have never read – so I am reading like mad on the iPhone as I travel. Wish I had one!

jennifermargulis March 11, 2010 at 5:42 pm

This looks like a VERY COOL device and one well worth buying (though I agree the price should come down). I'm saving every penny for an iPhone, having lost my iPod on a recent travel assignment. I'll keep the piggy bank open a little longer so I can buy this accessory as well!

Mary March 11, 2010 at 6:41 pm

Like the Idox idea, but I already “shelled” out for an Otterbox case. I love to watch France 24 newscasts (en français) in bed on my iTouch, and an Idox would be perfect for bedside table viewing.

mogrill March 11, 2010 at 9:06 pm

Fun gadget! Hubby loves this kind of stuff. Thanks for the chance.

sarahhenry March 11, 2010 at 10:13 pm

hmmm…what would i watch…i should say the latest food docos (and i probably would) but don't tell anyone that i'm secretly addicted to both glee and parenthood.

cynthiac March 12, 2010 at 12:31 pm

This would make a great gift for my son. His birthday is coming up soon.

March 12, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Great idea. I always cringe when I have my laptop out and the person in front of me reclines with no warning and what I imagine to be great force!
I think I would use one of these for travel – and I would definitely watch Amazing Race on it while flying thru the sky!

Marcia March 13, 2010 at 3:47 pm

I'll be viewing ANYTHING to relieve the boredom of a six hour flight! Please, airline executives, take a hint from Jet Blue and let us watch a program of our choosing. Free peanuts would be good too.

Mike March 13, 2010 at 5:50 pm

I'd use this to play Plants Vs Zombies while on my downtime!

Rosey March 14, 2010 at 11:37 am

I'll be viewing Wubbzy so my toddler behaves on the long flight.

rickkingsley March 14, 2010 at 7:13 pm

On Saturday's I go into a prison unit north of Dallas and have been permitted to bring in my iPod video with content that I download from You Tube or other sites. I have wanted to share the musics and messages from the church I attend, but this is only available in audio format. I recently acquired the Nano 5G so that I could capture the video and the idox case would be perfect, since it would enable much better capture without all the movement. I know the guys would love it!

ferriz March 15, 2010 at 12:14 am

I will be using it to watch music videos and videos i recorded of my friends doing crazy things!

ewalsh March 15, 2010 at 1:02 am

I'll be watching Pride And Prejudice on my iTouch. Thanks for the chance!

roseh2o19 March 15, 2010 at 3:08 pm

I'll be viewing “videos”.

Tom March 15, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Lots of movies that are already downloaded and waiting for me to have time to watch!

Lea March 15, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Well…I'm not sure what I'll be viewing, but I love the concept and the look of the ibox traveler. So winning one would be nice!
