Travel Dreams Come True at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

Updated 2.22.2017

You'll find luxury in the Canadian Rockies when you stay at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

The beautiful reflection of Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

What’s on your list of ¬†boomer travel dreams? Staying at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise has always been one of mine. Photographs of the famous Canadian resort hotel reflected in the waters of Lake Louise remind me of an alpine fairy tale setting worthy of a romantic getaway with Alan.

When Alan and I traveled on a Canadian Rockies Tauck tour, this boomer travel princess finally had her chance to experience two nights at the romantic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. And, I discovered that the magic comes from nature’s wonders rather than the resort’s grand exterior. In fact, the white multi-storied building with blue-green roof, doesn’t look much like a castle from the outside. Ah, but if you stand at the lake’s edge to witness the chateau’s reflection in the water for yourself, the scene takes on a magical quality.

When we stepped through the chateau’s large doors into the expansive lobby decorated with needlepoint carpets and arched doorways, a European, old world feel prevailed, but always accompanied by a view of Lake Louise or surrounding mountains. Our comfortable accommodations included a lake and glacier view, thanks to Tauck who has enough clout to guarantee tour guests the best rooms at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

The glaciers at Lake Louise

It’s hard to stay inside, when those mountain views keep calling, “Come out and play.” During our stay, I hiked on a lakeside trail while Alan stayed behind to nurse a sore back (so much for our romantic getaway). On the 3-mile jaunt, I encountered horse riders before I stopped to watch climbers practicing their skills. Canoes, available for rent at the resort, glided across the lake’s glacier green surface. The hike had an addictive quality as new vistas revealed themselves at every curve in the path, making it hard to turn back in time for dinner.

Our meals at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise proved to be just as elegant as the setting. At a long, leisurely dinner in the Fairview Room, Alan and I discussed the day’s scenic drive to Moraine Lake and the Spiral Tunnels while enjoying almond-crusted beef. For breakfast, we ate salmon eggs benedict at Poppy Brasserie while waiting for the rising sun to illuminate the glacial peaks outside the the restaurant’s window, digital cameras at the ready. The result? A baby boomer’s dream come true.

From mountain biking to guided fishing to cross country skiing or dog sledding in the winter, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise offers baby boomers enough adventure to keep them busy for days. Next time, I’d like to take the half-day hike to Lake Agnes and the Tea House.
