Saturday’s scene: Shopping For Pearls In Shanghai

by on 2010/11/27

On this busiest shopping weekend of the year, I’m reminded of the friends I made while shopping for pearls in Shangahi, China, last November. During a Regent cruise from Vancouver to Singapore, the ship stopped overnight in Shanghai. I got to know the store clerks at Ruepeipei Pearls and Jewelry quite well. Sometimes, shopping is about more than just buying things.

When my husband and I were younger, we avoided tours and just hired a cab for the day. Most places we ended up falling in love with the driver AND his world. Jean Paul in Le Havre, Roger in Hobart NZ, Carlos in Guatemala, and so many others. And then there was No Name in Naples in whose ear I shouted to wake him up as he sped, half-drunk, back to our ship.
Cheers!

Loved the camaraderie in the photo above. I agree. There is nothing like getting to know the natives to make a place come alive. Oh, and this post reminded me of my dad, so thank you. When he traveled to the Far East, when I was a child, he brought back pearls for me and my mom. I still remember how thrilled they made me.

Thanks for stopping by, Sandy. When we traveled to China, I had no
intention of buying pearls. But once I saw them, I couldn’t resist.
