The Bitterroot Valley is currently smoked in from area forest fires, which means that Alan and I are searching for an escape. The U.S. economy is obviously doing well because there are no rooms to be found on the Oregon Coast—a two-day drive from our house. Of course the upcoming solar eclipse is partly to blame. The path of totality (100% eclipse) begins at Lincoln Beach, OR, before starting a downward slide across the U.S. Did you know that Carbondale, Illinois, has the longest duration of total eclipse at 2 minutes 40 seconds? And how do I know so much about the eclipse? I read the NASA Eclipse 101 page.
Yes, we did get in a hike this week before the smoke settled in. Alan and I started Sunday with a 3-mile hike on Big Creek Trail. The wooded path is also popular with horse enthusiasts, who use the trail as access to the backcountry in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. If you’re planning a hike in the area, I highly recommend The Falcon Guide: Hiking the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. It’s our go-to hiking guide.
Always Hungry update: Between June 7 and August 2, I’ve lost 1″ in my waist and 1-1/2″ in my hips. The numbers on the scale? Well they’re moving slower than I would like. But slow, steady progress equals lasting change. I’m feeling great eating a diet that emphasizes high quality fat, low carbs like beans and berries, and good protein. I can’t believe what a difference eliminating processed foods makes. Do you know how much hidden sugar and wheat are in them? Read the labels! Thanks for letting me stay accountable by reporting my progress here. If you have questions, send me an email.
