The Best Hawaii Cruise Excursions

This article may contain referral links. Read our DISCLOSURE

Are you planning a cruise that travels through the Hawaiian Islands? If you enjoy active travel adventures, you’re in luck! There are so many fun Hawaii cruise excursions.

Should you book your Hawaii shore excursion with the cruise line or independently? All of our Hawaiian experiences were booked with the ship. It’s easy. We’re guaranteed that the ship won’t leave us if something goes wrong with the tour. And these days, some cruise lines like Silversea and Regent, include excursions with the fare (although not pricier ones like helicopter tours).

If you prefer booking private shore excursions or group ones—but with a guide—we recommend checking out the shore excursions at Viator or the guided experiences at Get Your Guide. But stay informed about cancellation policies (many tours now offer free cancellation up to 24 hours prior to the tour), in case bad weather or mechanical delays keep your ship from arriving to that specific port.

Snorkeling, jeep adventures, whale watching and more!

Cruise excursions in Hawaii come in all sizes, shapes and ability levels. We’ve traveled many times on South Pacific cruises that call on Hawaii. Our first-hand travel articles will introduce you to shore excursions like snorkeling in Cook’s Bay, whale watching in Maui, or touring the Mighty Mo at Pearl Harbor, Oahu. You can also use these ideas for a land-based trip to Hawaii.

Boomer Snorkeling Adventure on the Kona Coast

Snorkeling on the Kona Coast makes a fun adventure whether you’re on a Hawaii shore excursion or booking independently as part of a Hawaiian vacation. Snorkeling is one of our favorite active travel experiences. Add a fast ride in the ocean on a zodiac raft and Alan and I are in adventure heaven. That”s what […]

Maui Sunset Cruise

Maui sunsets are nothing short of spectacular. Combine a blazing ball of fire dipping into the sea with a relaxing ride on a catamaran and you have the best of both worlds. That’s why, when Visit Maui invited me to experience a Maui sunset cruise on the Alii Nui, they didn’t have to twist my arm. This […]

Exploring Lanai on a Jeep Safari Cruise Excursion

If you travel on South Pacific cruises as much as Alan and I do, you’ll be repeating cruise ports a lot. So when you arrive in Hawaii, what choices are there for cruisers who’ve already enjoyed whale watching on Maui or a thrilling helicopter ride over the island? Our advice? Book a Lanai jeep safari. Fun in the Air: Helicopter Adventure Over West Maui and Molokai

Although Alan and I are big advocates of boots on the ground adventures to truly know a destination, there is also something special about seeing it from a seat in a small aircraft or helicopter. Take the Hawaiian Islands, for instance. Steep sea cliffs with thundering waterfalls are no match for our boomer hiking skills. That’s why, when […]

Maui Whale Watching

On a Maui whale watching adventure with Seabourn Odyssey, Alan learned, once again, just how hard it is to photograph whales from a moving boat. The cruise excursion began when Alan and I tendered from the ship over to the pier in Lahina, where we boarded the Trilogy catamaran for a morning of whale watching. […]

Remembering the USS Arizona on Memorial Day

I photographed the USS Arizona Memorial while on a Seabourn cruise excursion to the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, better known as Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately, a photo doesn’t capture the somberness of the visit. When I boarded the Navy boat in Pearl Harbor that takes visitors to the USS Arizona Memorial, […]
