After 12 days touring Southern Italy, Alan and I have boarded the Silversea ship, Silver Spirit, for our ride back to the U.S. On this first week’s segment, we’re exploring Mediterranean ports from Rome to Barcelona. We hope you’ll enjoy our photo essay of Scenes from the Sea: Crossing the Atlantic Week 1. And stay tuned for in-depth articles about our incredible Atlantic crossing upon our return home.
There’s nothing better than a Silver Spirit breakfast on the back deck at La Terrazza on a beautiful Sunday in Livorno. While fellow cruises were out exploring Florence, Lucca and Pisa, we took a well-needed rest and enjoyed a leisurely day in the quiet of an empty ship.
The weather didn’t cooperate for our journey to Monte Carlo. After an extra night in Livorno, Silver Spirit sailed for Nice, instead. We didn’t mind the surprise port as it gave us a chance to enjoy a lovely walk on the promenade.

A cruise excursion on the Spanish island of Menorca, introduced Donna to the megalithic site of Torralba D’En Salord. Stone monuments known as Taulas have been standing guard here since 1500 B.C.
The Benedictine Monastery at Montserrat is a beautiful sight to see. We explored the area on a Silver Shore Collection cruise excursion from Barcelona that included a scenic drive, mountain train ride, lunch and short performance by the Escolania Children’s Choir.
On our second day in Barcelona, we walked La Rambla, turning left and right to explore the side streets. We discovered this peaceful spot for a coffee on a square within a square. Just the way we like it!
