65 Things to Do When You Retire: Travel

Is travel part of your retirement plan? You’ll find plenty of inspiration in 65 Things To Do When You Retire: TravelEdited by Mark Evan Chimsky, this retirement book offers travel ideas from 65 writers and travel experts, including me. Choose from essays about preparing for retirement travel, where to go, how to travel, taking road trips, cruising on the high seas, the spiritual side of travel and much more.

When Mark asked if I would participate in this anthology, I hesitated. After all, it’s about all I can do to keep up with my other writing commitments, including My Itchy Travel Feet. Then, I remembered an extra-special-to-me story that I wanted to share with a wider audience. Add in the fact that all the royalties from 65 Things To Do When You Retire: Travel are being donated to cancer research and prevention, and I was sold on participating in the project.

So what’s the story that I wanted to share? You’ll find it in the Special Places to Live section. It’s about listening when a place speaks to you. If you haven’t guessed already, my story is about Montana and why Alan and I moved here.

You’ll find plenty of well-known writers sharing their essays, as well. Travel writer and actor/director, Andrew McCarthy, writes about his walk on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. What does travel have to do with writing workshops? You’ll need to read novelist Elizbeth Berg’s essay. And, there is more retirement inspiration—much more—from many well-known travel bloggers. And, since I don’t want to leave any of them out, I’ll leave it to you to check out their names in the table of contents.

I know, I know. Many of you are saying, “Donna, why should I read this? I’m never going to be able to retire.” And, here’s my answer: You don’t have to retire to be inspired by this retirement book. Use the ideas for your next vacation or weekend trip. In fact, I don’t believe in waiting until you retire to travel. Do it now, as much as you can, however you can. Let these 65 essays spark your imagination.

And, please forgive me for jumping up and down. My name is on the cover with Andrew McCarthy, Elizabeth Berg and a slew of well-respected writers. Whoo-hoo!
