The end of a long-anticipated trip should leave travelers wanting more, don’t you agree? That’s what Alan and I appreciated so much at the end of our trip to Italy…the ending.
When Alan and I stepped through the nondescript entry to Sovana Hotel and Resort in southern Tuscany, we discovered a lobby that felt as if we were in an ancient Etruscan wine cellar.
The first words out of our mouths — “Why are we only staying here one night?” Traveling companions Jack and Sue agreed.
After road-tripping through northern Italy with Claudio Fontana of A La Carte Italy Tours exploring Lake Como, Lucca, Cinque Terre and Italy’s motor valley, we had arrived at Sorano. We were charmed by the town but even more so by our accommodations.
Sovana Hotel and Resort was worthy of a romantic getaway. One we hope to repeat in the future.
Staying in the tiny village of Sovana is like living with history. The same can be said for Sovana Hotel & Resort. Although the lobby area has the feel of a stone wine cellar, other public areas are filled with colorful modern art.
Our room looked out over the garden where a boxwood maze challenged us to find our way out. Furnished with a mixture of antiques and modern art, the bright decor hinted at the colors of the American Southwest. We found all the luxuries of home including a modern bathroom, TV, telephone, air-conditioning, safe and mini-frig.
The breakfast buffet offered a selection of Italian hams, home-baked bread, coffee cakes and the most delicious cheese that I’ve ever tasted. For dinner, our group walked through Sorano’s narrow streets to Ristorante di Merli, since Sovana Hotel & Resort’s restaurant, La Taverna Etrusca was closed for the day.
Although the interior of Sovana Hotel & Resort is lovely, we found the park-like grounds to be enchanting. From the back hedge, Tuscany was on display with its olive groves and hills planted with grape vines.
And of course, just down the hill were Etruscan ruins to be explored. What more could boomer travelers ask of romantic accommodations in southern Tuscany?
