In romantic South Africa boomer adventure is more than wild animals and fantastic photo opportunities. You’ll also find a setting that will set your heart aflutter. When Alan and I traveled to South Africa, we discovered beds sprinkled with rose petals, candles lighting the way to a romantic bath and private plunge pools.
Our luxurious accommodations at Birkenhead House in the South African coastal town of Hermanus, offered elegant romance with a four poster bed and colorful artwork. On our last night, after a dinner of cauliflower soup and grilled kudu, Alan and I climbed the stairs to our room to the glow of votive candles flickering on the steps. Opening the door, we discovered more candles scattered around the room. Rose petals floated in a waiting bath. Romantic South Africa doesn’t get any better than this.
Our Ivory Lodge villa at Lion Sands in South Africa came with a plunge pool for cooling off after a hot morning on safari. Alan and I sat on the lounges to watch elephants crossing the river into Kruger National Park.
At Ivory Lodge, the bed overlooked a wall of windows making nature the star of our dreams. But even more romantic was the night we were led by lantern to an outside dining area where tables draped in white linen cloths sat around a roaring fire. More lanterns hung from tree branches twinkling down on us as we enjoyed a gourmet meal compete with fine wine.
At Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge in northwestern South Africa, Alan and I enjoyed a suite that literally rambled through the rocks. No. 6 had a living area with fireplace and a large bedroom that looked out onto a private plunge pool. A flight of steps led from the dressing area to a bath with a shower carved into a boulder. Beyond the glass door, another patio contained an outdoor shower and tub for bathing with a view. On the last night, we returned from the game drive to find flickering candles lining the staircase to the claw-foot tub where a hot bubble bath waited for us. How is that for romance South Africa style?
