Leaning Tower of Pisa on a cloudy day

Alan and I hadn’t planned a visit to the Leaning Tower of Pisa on our Boomer Road Trip to Northern Italy. But, we were running ahead of schedule so our guide Claudio Fontana of A La Carte Italy Tours suggested that we stop to take a few photos of the famous bell tower. Scaffolding surrounded the top of the tower, which truly does lean —it no longer has bells, by the way. Did you know that it took over three centuries to construct the tower once the ground floor of white marble was begun on August 8, 1173?

Plan your Italian road trip with our Italy Travel Planning Guide.

Although Alan and I are happy to have seen it, this is one of those been there, done that, don’t need to see it again type of boomer travel experiences for us.
