Saturday’s scene: Rusted Dreams

On a four-wheel-drive adventure in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, Alan and I discovered a car’s rusted remains. Close by, abandoned mining structures held the lost dreams of a long forgotten mining community (dating from 1860) near California Gulch.


 With an elevation of around 10,000 ft., life must have been hard for the prospectors. Active baby boomers will discover scenery and history on the trail that summits California Pass, between the cities of Silverton and Ouray.
