USS Arizona Memorial, Oahu, Hawaii

I photographed the USS Arizona Memorial while on a Seabourn cruise excursion to the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, better known as Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately, a photo doesn’t capture the somberness of the visit. When I boarded the Navy boat in Pearl Harbor that takes visitors to the USS Arizona Memorial, the Navy officer on duty requested that the group proceed quietly in respect to the dead sailors entombed in the ship. Her words set the tone for a sad, but inspiring experience.

This Memorial Day weekend (2012) marks the 50th anniversary of the USS Arizona Memorial. World War II Valor in the Pacific will be hosting a number of special events including Sunset Boat Tours on Sunday, May 27 and Monday, May 28, 2012.
