Fifty years ago today, Hawaii became a state. Yet, I hesitate to say that the citizens of Hawaii are celebrating because many, especially native Hawaiians, have mixed feelings about the event. To learn more about this issue, check out Vera Marie Baderstcher’s review of The Last Aloha
As a baby boomer traveler, I can’t resolve political or philosophical issues. But I can pay homage to a place that offers adventure mixed with relaxation in an exotic setting, populated by beautiful people. So, here’s a recap from my Hawaii files:

There's no denying the beauty and scenic diversity of Hawaii, but I can understand the mixed feelings on the part of native families.

I can remember when Hawaii became a state. It was a big deal — lots of excitement to adding that extra star to the flag. Hard to believe it has been 50 years.
