My Itchy Travel Feet | The Baby Boomer's Guide To Travel

Stretch your travel dollars with a repositioning cruise

by on 2008/11/10

The baby boomers that I know are looking to stretch their travel dollars. Those who can still afford to travel want to make every precious dollar count. Are you discouraged about the recent bad financial news? Don’t give up on travel, instead, find ways to make the most of your available funds.

A repositioning cruise might be your answer. Usually, deeply discounted (for instance, Regent prices theirs as 2 for 1′s), crossings offer great value.

Alan and I will be leaving soon for our fourth crossing, sailing from Cape Town to Rio de Janerio on Regent’s ship, Navigator. Previously, we’ve crossed the Atlantic starting in Monte Carlo and ending in Ft. Lauderdale. And, one of our favorites is the Los Angeles to Sydney itinerary that passes through French Polynesia. We’ve also done this one in reverse, boarding in Auckland and continuing to Los Angeles.

What’s that? You say that all those sea days must be boring? Think again. Look at what you can do on a crossing:

  • experience all that the ship has to offer, which isn’t possible on port-intensive itineraries
  • stay up late and dance the night away because you can sleep-in the next day
  • expand your mind with new learning experiences presented by expert lecturers
  • take hands-on lessons in cooking, music, crafts or bridge
  • tour the ship’s galley, bridge or engine room (if your cruise line offers this opportunity)
  • pamper yourself with rejuvenating spa treatments
  • practice rest and relaxation at the pool or on your own balcony
  • learn yoga or try a fitness class in the ship’s gym
  • socialize with fellow passengers in an unhurried environment
  • reconnect with your spouse or partner, sea days offer lots of time for romance

A Google search on “responsitioning cruises” reveals plenty of travel bargains. What are you waiting for? Start clicking.

Post a comment to tell me about your experiences sailing the Atlantic or Pacific on a repositioning cruise.

With gas prices at a premium and airlines adding fees to everything from ticket prices to luggage, it's no wonder more people are rethinking..
